Engaging the Community / Possible School Closures
Presentation to the Community on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
Presentation to the Community on Tuesday, December 8, 2009
At our April 2009 Public Meeting, the Sunshine Coast Board of Education made a decision to examine the problem of declining enrollment in elementary schools located in the Sechelt area, emphasizing community consultation (see board motions).
Over the fall of 2009, school district senior management launched a series of four information and discussion sessions with a committee of parent, staff, community and student representatives from all four Sechelt elementary schools: West Sechelt, Sechelt, Kinnikinnick and Davis Bay. Summaries and the information presented for all four meetings are available below.
The mandate of this “Engaging the Community” committee was to provide the board with options for consideration. On November 10, 2009, the committee recommended to the Board that status quo is no longer acceptable, that we keep West Sechelt open, and that we consolidate the other three schools into one unspecified site.
The next steps will be for the Board to consider the information and recommendations, and present more specific options for broader community input. We look forward to hearing from the public at the meetings announced below, and hope you will take the time to examine the data presented at the four “Engaging the Community” meetings.
