About Gibsons Alternate Program (GAP)
The Gibsons Alternate Program provides a small, intensive school environment which integrates therapeutic intervention, social skills acquisition, conflict resolution and problem solving into every aspect of the educational program.
The Program is staffed by personnel with specific expertise and qualification in dealing with students with severe behaviours and those with emotional difficulties. These personnel may include a teacher or special education teacher, a youth and family worker, a special education teaching assistant, and a counsellor. The counsellor provides individual psychological counselling and consultation to families.
The program also offers creative opportunities to advance personal growth and self-exploration. It offers a low student-teacher ratio and an outdoor educational component. The GAP is for students in grades eight to twelve.
CLIENTELE
• Students experiencing difficulty at Elphinstone or Chatelech Secondary Schools.
• Students who are experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral difficulties that make it extremely difficult to be successful in the regular high school setting.
•Students who for a variety of complex reasons find it best to learn in a small self contained learning atmosphere.
•Youth who have been out of school for more than a year.
•Students whose educational needs require alternative paths from the regular school environment.
HOW DO YOU ACCESS THE PROGRAM?
• Students presently enrolled at Elphinstone or Chatelech Secondary School must complete a screening process where school personnel will recommend placement dependent on individual need.

• Students not enrolled at Elphinstone or Chatelech Secondary School complete a screening process which determines suitability to this learning program or recommends placement in another educational program or community service.
