School Facilities
RCCES offers the following to students:
• a well stocked library with over 14,000 books.
• a computer lab with 30 Macintosh computers and two printers.
• a multipurpose room that is used during school hours for music, small group assemblies, video viewing, art and the PAC canteen
• a gymnasium
• a multi-use track exists around the field area of the school. This track is used by students and the community.
• a multi-use court at the front of the school is available to students at recess, noon hour, before and after school, and outside of school hours.
• a community use room that is used by a variety of community programs both during and after school hours -
• Brownies, Guides, Scouts
• Senior’s Bridge, Sunshine Coast Orchestra etc.
Playing Field
Our playing field is used by both school and community groups. In consideration for the wellness and comfort of our students, we request that owners pick up after their pets. Animal excrement poses a number of health risks to our students.
Community Disaster Response Provisions
We have a large emergency response container in the southeast corner of the school property. This container is filled with emergency response equipment and supplies in the event of a natural disaster (earthquake etc.) in our community.
Telephones
There is a pay telephone in the foyer of the Community Schools office for students who need to use the phone, on their own time, for non-emergency purposes. In urgent circumstances, students may use the phone in the office after showing a permission slip from their teacher. Students are expected to bring a note from home if they are altering their usual after school routine (e.g. going home on the bus). Social arrangements, like going to a friends after school, should be made a day ahead .
Washrooms
Students are encouraged to use the washroom at recess and lunch rather than during instructional time. We have two washrooms for student use, one at each end of the school. There is third set of washrooms up by the gym.
Student Services and Guidelines
Health Services
Several members of the staff have first aid training to deal with minor injuries and health problems.
Health services are provided by Public Health and include
*immunizations
*vision and hearing screening
*head lice checks-parent volunteers
*monitoring Medical Alert list
ALL medication administered to students at school must be monitored through the Public Health Nurse. Forms are available at the office.
Special Education
We provide support for students who need short or long-term assistance to meet their educational needs. This may be through classroom support or one-to-one and small group instruction in the Resource Room.
Referrals are made by the teacher to the School Based Team. The school may also consult with and make referrals to other District and community services such as occupational or physical therapists, psychologists, or other government agencies.
Buses
Many of our students make use of school bus transportation to and from school. This service is provided by the School District on the basis that students will be responsible, cooperative, and mindful of the safety of others. Students who compromise the safety of others while riding the bus may lose this privilege.
Parental Involvement at RCCES
Parents: We encourage you to become involved in the school. How can you help? Inform the teacher about things:
• that might be bothering your child
• that your child is interested in
• that you feel are important to the education of your child
• Join the Parent Advisory Council
• Volunteer to help in the classroom and/or at special events like Sports Day, field trips, assemblies, etc.
• Attend the Parent/Teacher interviews
• Parents who volunteer as drivers or supervisors on field trips, must have an approved RCMP criminal recur check on file with the school district and school. Forms to get this check completed are available at the office.
Reporting Absences
Each morning the office verifies absences. Your cooperation in calling in any absences, or sending a note with a sibling is appreciated. Please try to notify the school before 9:15 a.m.
Holiday Absences
It is difficult for teachers to substitute work sheets and resource packages for class instruction. If you choose to holiday while school is in session, your child’s teacher will provide a genral study and/or journal outline. Your child will be responsible to catch up on the skills and concepts missed on his/her return. A day in school cannot be replaced.
Lateness
Please assist your child to ensure that he/she arrives to school on time. The beginning of the school day is a time that teachers use to set the tone for the day and to give important reminders and directions. Your child misses valuable minutes of the day when arriving late. Furthermore, late arrivals disrupt the learning that is already in progress from the beginning of the school day. Please be courteous and arrive on time!
Illness
Please do not send your child to
school if there are signs of ill health in the morning. Good health is necessary for effective learning. We do not have the facilities or the personnel to care for sick children.
Students who become ill during the day are to go directly to their teacher. Our policy is to send students who are ill home as soon as possible. Our practice is to call parents and ask that the student be picked up. For this reason, it is important that parents keep the school informed of current work and emergency contact numbers.
Visiting the School and the Classroom
• Please check in at the office if you come to the school during the school day. Ms. Baba or Ms. McBain will be happy to help you.
• If you need to go to your child’s classroom during instructional hours, please knock before entering.
• When you wish to meet with a teacher, please make an appointment and inform him/her of the purpose of your visit.
• If you are taking your child out of school during the school day, please sign him/her out at the office.
When You Have a Concern
Go directly to the person who can address the concern. In most cases, the first line of communication is with the teacher. The school staff can help you identify just where your concern belongs. At times, a third party can be helpful in reaching a successful resolution. Please contact the principal if you wish to include a third party in discussions. In the resolution of all issues, the needs of the student remain our central goal.
Volunteering
Please.....
• Sign in and out at the office.
• Familiarize yourself with the classroom teacher’s routines and expectations. If you are unclear about how you might help, just ask.
• Stay with your assigned group throughout the program or activity.
• Understand that you may be asked to work with a group to which your child is not assigned. Please trust the teacher to do what is in the best interest of everyone.
• Assist with any emergency situation as requested.
• Model the behaviours that we expect from our students and phrase your directions in positive terms.
• Use our key words to compliment students on their choices and behaviour.
• Make the teacher aware of any situations that concern you.
• Encourage all students to participate to the best of their ability.
• Make sure you have completed a criminal records check and volunteer driver form.
• Respect the fact that confidentiality is of utmost importance. Anything seen or heard in the classroom must stay in the classroom. Certain information about individual students cannot be shared by the classroom teacher. Please understand that a teacher may not be able to answer certain questions due to this fact.
