Code of Conduct
RCCES
1. Purpose:
• to establish and maintain a nurturing, safe and, for some students, a healing environment.
• to provide a consistent, just process and structure within which all students can learn.
• to enable our students to be respectful, caring, cooperative, to give their best effort, and to be safe.
• to clarify expectations for student behaviour at school, going to and from school, and while involved in school activities off site
2. Conduct Expectations:
There are five key words that guide our actions, interactions, and choices at RCCES
Respect - for self, others, and for the environment
Caring - for self, others, and the environment
Cooperation - with others - staff, parents, guests, each other
Effort - means giving and doing our best
Safety - both physical and emotional for self and others
Unacceptable Behaviour
This includes behaviour that is
• disrespectful
• uncaring
• uncooperative
• and unsafe.
In general, behaviour that interferes with the learning of others or causes emotional or physical threat is unacceptable.
In particular, the following behaviours will not be tolerated:
• Bullying, harassment and intimidation.
• Violence or physical aggression.
• Possession or use of illegal substances or weapons.
• Theft and vandalism.
• Retribution against a person who has reported an incident.
Rising Expectations
As our students become older and more mature, our expectations of them change. We expect increased personal responsibility and self-discipline with increased age.
3. Consequences:
Our goal in discipline is to strengthen students and teach them to view a problem or mistake as an opportunity to learn a better way. Our staff is committed to using the strategies and principles of “Restitution”. We respond to difficulties using the following guiding principles:
• Disciplinary action will be preventive and restorative whenever possible, rather than merely punitive.
• Consequences will depend on the severity and frequency of the inappropriate behaviour as well as the age and maturity of the student.
• Consistent and fair responses to misbehaviour are a priority.
• As often as possible, students will be involved in problem solving discussions with other students and staff members in order to fix their mistakes and restore their sense of self.
• Certain behaviours such as bullying, harassment, intimidation, defiance, violence, and illegal activities are totally unacceptable at RCCES. Consequences for these actions may range from students losing playground privileges to in-school or at-home suspensions.
Notification
In serious cases of misconduct, the school will notify parents. School district officials, the police and other agencies may be informed and involved where appropriate.
Bicycles/Skateboards/Roller blades/Scooters
We encourage all students to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Students who wish to ride a bicycle, scooter, skateboard or roller blades to school must wear a helmet. When students reach the school grounds, they must get off their bike (or other equipment) and walk to the bike racks or building.
When leaving, bikes must be walked off of the school grounds. This rule applies to skateboards and roller blades as well. Students may not ride in proximity to the main building or adventure playground until after 4:00 p.m.
Leaving the School Grounds at Lunch
Students must have written permission form a parent if they are leaving the grounds at noon hour. They also need to sign out at the main office. Students are expected to remain on the school grounds at recess.
Recess/Noon Hour
On out days, students are expected to go outside unless they have a specific, teacher-approved reason to be inside.
On in days, students may choose to go to the library, the resource room, the multipurpose room, or the gym when supervision is available.
Once students have made a choice, they are expected to remain there.
