Gibsons Elementary School Groundbreaking Ceremony

School District No. 46 (Sunshine Coast) and the Ministry of Education entered into a Gibsons Elementary Project Agreement  – on April 21, 2012 it was announced that the school district would receive $14.3M to build the new school.

Originally, Gibsons Elementary School was going to undergo a seismic upgrade, but a feasibility study conducted in 2007 showed constructing a smaller, more energy-efficient school would be more cost-effective. The school building was constructed in 1950 and is a mix of modular units, wood frame, post and beam and unreinforced masonry. The building has seismic deficiencies, building system deficiencies, inefficient layout and is a larger capacity then required for the student enrolment.
