MEASLES UPDATE
To: Students, Parents, and Staff of ALL SCHOOLS
As you may have heard, a few students and staff in Vancouver schools have fallen sick with measles.
There is an outbreak of measles in several regions of BC, but at this time it is centered in the Lower
Mainland.
Measles has become very rare in Canada and thanks to vaccine, most children in Canada canít catch
measles. The cases that are occurring now are in those who did not get the vaccine. Sometimes
however, people who have had only one dose of vaccine can catch it as well. Two doses of any
measles-containing vaccine works very well to prevent infection.
Everyone born after 1956 (and who have not had measles itself) should have two doses of measles
vaccine. It is extremely safe and available at your local public health unit.
All parents and staff should check their vaccination records and those of their children to make sure
they have had two doses of measles vaccine. In BC, children usually receive the MMR (Measles,
mumps and rubella) vaccine at 12 and 18 months of age.
If your child has not had measles vaccine, and is exposed to someone with measles in his or
her class, your child may be excluded from school for up to three weeks or longer. This is to
protect others and keep measles from spreading in school. Exclusion disrupts family and school life
greatly. We all want to avoid it.
Now is the time to make sure all students and staff members are protected against measles.
Born after 1956? You need two doses of vaccine or to be certain you had measles itself.
Need more information? You can find clear information you can trust at ImmunizeBC
HealthLink BC (8-1-1) will also answer your questions about measles and MMR vaccine. For more information click on the link in the sidebar to the right.

Cedar Grove Library Available On-line
If you would like to access the Cedar Grove Library, please click on this link. This will take you to the School District main library page where you can then select Cedar Grove. From there you will be able to search for books in our collection. Over time, the students may get log on IDs and Passwords to allow them to see their activity, search for books and put them on hold. For now, we have implemented the search and find options.
Cedar Grove Elementary School serves appoximately 200 K-7 students with a staff of 20 teachers, a principal, and 12 support staff. We are situated in the community of Gibsons, a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver, BC). We work hard to be a welcoming school community and appreciate the hard working parent volunteers we have that allow us to offer many enriching programs for our students. Our goal is to meet the varied educational needs of all students and to have every student try to reach their highest potential.
At Cedar Grove, students and staff demonstrate socially responsible behaviour by practising our Key Words: Cooperation, Kindness and Responsibility and Respect. Our school goals this year are:
1. To increase primary and intermediate students’ achievement in literacy, both reading and writing.
2. To guide our students to behave in a more socially responsible manner that is safe and respectful of self, others and the environment.
To aid in communication with our families we hope that you find this website informative and useful, as well as enjoyable. It is a work in progress. Within this website, you will find general information about our school such as policies and procedures, hours, staffing, and the Code of Conduct.
We post all of our parent newsletters on this site and past newsletters are archived for your convenience. Minutes from all of the Parent Advisory Council meetings are also posted each month.
